CHAPTER SIX

I went completely still, even as the room seemed to spin around me.

“Is it true?” My voice was deathly soft. I gazed at Mom, breathing deep, measured breaths and not even blinking as I watched her. “Are you the reason I’m undead now?”

Mom stiffened, squaring her shoulders. “Drink first, then we’ll talk.”

“What happens if I don’t?” I slid the bag across the counter, back to Mom, with a fierce shove. My stomach churned, rumbling astonishingly loud in the quiet kitchen. “What if I just…don’t drink blood ever again?”

“What? Don’t be ridiculous. You can’t just choose not to drink blood.” Mom sputtered, her face paling even as she blustered at me. A strange scent floated to me then, sharp and salty and metallic. Fear, my mind told me through an instinct I couldn’t even begin to grasp. I can smell her fear.

The mere thought of it turned my stomach. If I tried to drink the blood she was sliding back across the counter toward me, I’d probably throw up.

Wrinkling my nose with disgust, I shook my head. “Why not? I didn’t choose this lifestyle, if you can even call it that.” I balled my hands into tight fists at my sides as I glared across the counter at my mother. “I didn’t ask to be undead, and I have absolutely no intention of drinking blood just because you say I have to.”

“Gwen, it will make you feel better if you just drink the blood. I’ll even make you a deal. I’ll answer any question you ask me with absolute honesty if you’ll just drink the blood, please.” Her dark eyes were wide, and she silently pleaded with me to be reasonable.

“Hang on a second,” Forrest grumbled, frowning over at me. “What, exactly, do you think you’re going to achieve by not drinking the blood, Gwen?”

I bared my teeth at him, an ugly attempt at flashing him a tight smile. “I’d rather be dead than undead against my will.” With that, I cut another glare at my mother, hoping she caught my drift.

Forrest barked out a harsh laugh that brought the fine hairs on the back of my neck to attention. The sound dragged my gaze back to him, and my breath hitched at just how attractive he was. His good looks bordered on being unfair, easily outshining every mortal boy I’d ever had a crush on. It was impossible not to drown in those dark, entrancing eyes of his.

“You can’t starve yourself to death by not drinking blood, if that’s what you’re thinking,” he snorted. The roughness in his tone, the edge of sarcasm, broke the spell his good looks seemed to weave around me against my will.

My lip curled up in a snarl, and I shifted on the stool, leaning away from him. I needed to put a bit of distance between us. I drummed my fingers on the cool, smooth granite countertop, trying my best to pin my mother down with a probing gaze. “If it isn’t possible
